Emme Pretorius

Emme’s body of work explores the degradation of the Garden Route’s Afrotemperate forests historically and currently and the symbolic attempts at rectifying this damage. This is done through photographing the forest with medium and large format film cameras and, through darkroom processes, hand printing these photographs on multiple sheets of expired light-sensitive photographic paper which is then sewn together by hand.

The expired nature of the paper, while still being archival, creates a grey, ghost like feeling which speaks to the ghostly nature of the forest: what the forest once was vs what it is now and reminiscing on the giant trees that are no longer there after extensive logging practices in the area.

This project further looks at the potential of photography to evoke an understanding of this current and historical degradation of the Afrotemperate forests of the Garden Route in South Africa. This is done with a specific consideration of materiality and process and the extension of the medium of photography’s possibilities through these considerations.
